Shoes at States

The Western States Endurance Run Lottery for 2021 would have been this Saturday 12/5. (Lucky for me, I’m in the race for 2021!) Instead of our usual lottery viewing party extravaganza, I’ll fill the void with a list of the most likely shoes (with lottery-esque probability percentages!!!) that will get me to the finish line in Auburn, CA, at the end of June 2021.

  1. Hoka Speedgoat 4 65% – Having used these for 27hours around the Wonderland Trail this summer without issue or even a blister, I know these will work at Western. I don’t love the upper or tongue, which leaves the door open to other possibilities.
  2. The North Face Vectiv Enduris 15% – What can I say: I like rockered shoes with high cushion! That’s exactly what I hope these will be! I’ll get them in January so I’ll have lots of time to see if they’ll work.
  3. The North Face Vectiv Infinite 7% – It’s really just a guess that the Enduris will be my favorite.
  4. The North Face Flight Vectiv 5% – All three TNF shoes launch January 26th
  5. Hoka Stinson ATR 6 5% – I know, I just went from a cool name dropping hipster to an old fuddy duddy with this pick…but these are wider and more cushioned than the Speedgoat. If anything goes wrong with whatever shoe I start with, I could see myself finishing on the track in these! There’s very little chance I’d start in these but they would make the ultra shuffle a bit more manageable if I go from plan A to plan Just Finish!
  6. Hoka Challenger ATR 6 2% – At first I thought these could overtake my Speedgoats, but now I’m just not sure.
  7. On Running Cloud Ultra 1% – Maybe just maybe these will actually be like running on clouds. They come out in March so I’d still have some time to get used to them.

Wait List

  • Salomon Ultra Glide – A June release makes these an extreme back up plan.
  • Saucony Endorphin Trail – Likewise: Mid June release makes this highly unlikely…but some shoes get all the luck.

Check Back over the course of the Spring as I post some more Western States 2021 content!!
