Western Dreams

I’ve mentioned having dreams about Western States in some other posts.

A lot of my night dreams feature me getting into the race at the very last minute. I’m in Squaw, the race is starting in minutes; I go to a registration table and shyly ask, “Does there happen to be an open spot?” Answer: “It appears there is! Here’s a number; you better hustle!” Most of those dreams were in the years before the waitlist; somehow my subconscious was smart enough to know that any last second entries already had a name attached to them.

I’ve also day dreamed a lot about getting into Western States. When I was younger, it was dreaming about winning my way in, golden ticket style.

After I opened 7hills, I often contemplated how many shoes from the Title Sponsor I could buy in exchange for one of their entries. Or how could I meet the right Person from the brand who had the Golden task of assigning their sponsored spots; could I persuade that person to use it on me?

The last couple years I’ve seriously considered becoming a sponsor myself, just to get into the race—effectively buying my way in.

This year was different: this year the lottery gods chose me! This year I didn’t have to dream of ways I’d be in the race.

Then the race, like much of Spring, was cancelled. Not postponed; not a “we’ll wait and see.” Cancelled. Everyone in the 2020 race can get into the 2021 race.

Since the news I’ve been daydreaming again: what if life goes back to normal May 1? What if sooner? What if everyone is happy and running mountains again with 6 weeks to spare before the June 27th start at Squaw that was to be? Will the board reconsider?

I don’t know, but it definitely doesn’t seem as long of a shot as my past dreams of getting into the big dance.

So I’ll just keep dreaming through this crazy corona/Covid mess.

I hope you have some Good dreams that get you through these Tough times!

Stay Safe
