7 at States January Update

I wish this update had better news to share. I haven’t been running much and have a nagging knee/leg issue.

Starting after the Western States 100 lottery in 2019 I’ve wanted to blog away my training. (Scroll back for past posts.)

As we end January, I’m starting to feel behind in training as I haven’t run over 60minutes much lately. In November my right IT band was pretty tight (not unusual for me!) and my right hamstring was super tight, but not in the speedwork “pulled hamstring” way that happens to me often. It felt like a uniform pulling up at the back of my right knee. Almost constant. After driving places with my kids, my leg would be so tight getting out of the car and even feel painful while driving.

Then after one typical 75 minute run my knee swelled up and rotated laterally. I was limping around a few days but after resting and getting adjusted several times by my chiropractor I thought I was over the crisis.

December’s running wasn’t very good as the pain seemed to settle as a general knee pain. My right leg just felt off. Driving places still exacerbated it.

In January I have really noticed how downhill running makes me knee feel much worse. I’ve tried to avoid hills lately. Both my chiro and PT suspect some sort of meniscus issue. I actually thought I was improving this week, but after my flat run Wednesday my right hamstring seized up again. Today, It still feels tight and my knee has gone back to where it was weeks ago.

I recently got my bike fixed up from Shots and Sprockets, our shop neighbor, so I’ll be hitting the roads via bike a lot in February. More PT and chiro will be scheduled.

I noticed the Hoka Stinson 6 with lots of cushion felt better than any other shoe during this injury time. So I’m definitely going to have to bump the Stinson up the list of Shoes at States contenders!

Check back next month and send some good mojo vibes my way!! Feel free to email advice to the shop if you’ve had similar issues!
