Covid 20 WS100

No this isn’t a new strain…just my Covid-19 post regarding the 2020 running of The Western States 100 Endurance Run.

I heard this week that the Journey Films movie Unbreakable, telling the tale of the 2010 Western States run from the front of the men’s pack, was recently released to YouTube. Go watch the movie now!! So good!! Three folks pointed out seeing me in the film—a moment on stage standing next to Tony K.

If you would have told me then that 10 years later I’d have the same number of Western States wins as Tony, I would have been ecstatic 😂. (We both have zero, but he sure seemed poised to have at least one!)

If you would have told me then that I would next get into the race in 2020 only to have the race snatched away from me and every other entrant by a world pandemic—I would have thought you nuts on many levels.

As it is, it just feels like that is what is going to happen: No 2020 Western States. I don’t have any insider information; just a horrible gut feeling caused by daily news briefings and a death toll updated by the minute.

I rolled my ankle last week at Squak Mt; my worst roll ever as it swelled up pretty good afterwards. Normally in training mode, I would have been freaked out! Oh no, I’m loosing fitness because I’m going to take a few days off to make sure the swelling goes down.

Instead, I felt nothing: Oh well, just another thing not going according to plan.

When we got word that schools were closing for two weeks which quickly turned to six, I optimistically thought maybe that could help my training for this years WS100. Normally I do my longest training runs when the kids are at school, so I was really, really trying to find a silver lining: maybe I overtrained the last two years, so this change will prevent that mistake; maybe I should be throwing in more shorter faster runs instead of solely focusing on two long runs a week.

I’m still trying to remain positive about the whole situation in regards to States: Canyons 100k was cancelled—but hey, Did I really want to do that one?! And I never booked a place or a flight for Squaw so, Score!

And maybe, just maybe, we’ll all be seeing each other at Squaw still in 2020!
