7 at States getting closer

It feels like it’s getting really real now…sort of.

Just saw that GU was named official nutrition sponsor of this year’s race. Optimistic!! I hope they have Liquid GU on the course; it’s so good. I plan to fill a Salomon flask with 10 of them for a cool 1,000 calories or so in my front pocket. And then have my crew resupply me with one or two more. And who wouldn’t want to see a buffet of GU waffles at the start of the race!

But the real sticky subject isn’t GU here; the real question is: Will the race go off June 26th?

I’m dying to know for sure; I’m dying for a boost in motivation that knowing would surely provide. Nagging injuries have left me a bit frustrated. More recently my right calf. All in all I feel much better than a few posts back. But I really want to get my mileage up. Last week was my longest week of the year and I only hit 44.5 miles.

I’ve thought about my next Western since my last in 2010. The thought of waiting one more year is much less appealing than running the race a bit undertrained. Even waiting out a month or two delay to toe the line in Olympic Valley in July or August seems less ideal than running under prepared.

What I remember most about 2010 was that it was the Unbreakable year with Geoff, Anton, Kilian and Hal. I remember that I thought I was “having a bad day” when I entered Forest Hill in 9th or 10th place. Boy would I kill to have another day like that now! I remember thinking these exact words at one point when I was still in the top 10: “oh it doesn’t matter, I’ll do better next time.” Next Time! Ha!

With Western States, you’re never assured another next time. You gotta go and give it your best no matter what.

With new lottery rules announced last month, I feel like the stage is set for a re-draw of the lottery for a 2022 race assuming that the 2021 race is cancelled. Those are the kind of pessimistic thoughts I have as I wait for an official announcement. Little things like the GU announcement are just enough to keep me going!!
