Catching up with Jodee Adams Moore

This past weekend was the first annual Crystal Mountain SkyMarathon. Part of the US SkyRunning series and directed by Seattle legend Scott McCoubrey and friends, it is sure to be a classic. Team 7 Hills runner Jodee Adams Moore added another win and course record to her resume with her run there, so Phil and Paige took it as a chance to pick her brain about the race and running in general.

Phil: You were the Scott Kinabalu’s again.  Have you gotten a chance to run in any 2015 Scott proto-types yet?  Have you had discussions with Scott yet regarding being sponsored next year–or when does that kind of thing usually happen?

Jodee: I have not tried out any new models and I have not discussed any sponsorship deals with Scott for next year nor do I know when this sort of thing might happen as this is my first year as a sponsored athlete. I’ve enjoyed having the support to run in a variety of races this year and comfy shoes so I hope I have a similar opportunity in 2015.

Phil: As we were running by the cabins on the “easy” part of the course Saturday, I thought, ‘Man, it would be fun to have one of those!’ Did you think the same thing?

Jodee: They sure look cozy after a long day of skiing!

Paige: Hey Jodee, we’ve never met, but as a rookie trail runner I have heard some inspiring tails of your impressive, carefree running style. I look forward to following you on a trail some day just to get a glimpse of this. What do you focus on (or drift off on) to maintain such a fluid style?

Jodee: I try not to try too hard! As best I can I like to let my mind be free of itself and not expend anymore energy than that which I need to run (or hike) as quickly as I can. I also don’t like to talk much. I like it when there is quiet and flowing and ease- the goal is similar to that of meditation. Meditative running is powerful.

Paige: When you are running a new course like this one, how much time do you spend studying up on it? Are you the “draw the profile on your arm” or the jump in and figure it out while the hills are rolling at ya sort?

Jodee: More of the latter- Its nice to have a rough idea of the course but to analyze it too much doesn’t interest me. There will be hills. It will be long. There will be people and water and food pretty regularly. This has been a common denominator in all of the ultras I’ve run so far.

Paige: I heard from Phil and Chris that the views of Mount Rainier offered some good company along the way.Was cresting a climb and getting rewarded with that like getting hit with a Mount Rainier flavored GU? Must have put a little skip in your stride eh?

Jodee: Stunning. I loved that course so much. Scott McCoubry knows and loves Crystal so well and it sure did show by such a creative and gorgeous course.

Congrats again, Jodee, and thanks for taking the time to answer our questions! Full results for the race can be found here. Glenn captured the amazing views once again in his race photos here.
