This is the first Brooks shoe I have ever seriously run in. The shoe feels fast, is low to the ground because it has a thin midsole combined with a 6mm heel-toe offset. The Mazama offers heaps of stability to crush any trail you come across! I have taken them out to Bridle Trails as well as the Capital Peak Mega Fat Ass and adventures in the Olympics. So far the Mazama has thrived on any trail I have run.
Travis Schultz reviews the Brooks Mazama
(expected release date – Oct 2016)
Specs according to Brooks:
Stack height: 23mm heel, 17mm forefoot
Weight: 9.3 oz (mens size 9)
Similar shoes:
Peral Izumi EM N1 Trail
New Balance Vazee
Inov-8 Terraclaw
Saucony Peregrine
The sticky rubber outsole has a bi-directional pattern for excellent grip for both uphill and downhill running.
Moving on to the uppers, they are composed of a double-layered mesh matched with a gusseted tongue to help keep out dirt and anything else you may put your foot in. Also worth noting is the lace garage to keep the laces tucked out of the way.
If I had to describe what it felt like using other shoes. I would say it fits and handles like an S-lab with the propulsion/toe of a Newton. Further, I like it better than both of those offerings.
Final thoughts:
The Mazama is an exciting shoe that combines the speed/lightness of a racing flat with the protection of a proper trail shoe. It is a nice edition to the Brooks line. It is way faster than the Cascadia while offering more protection/cushion than the Pure Series. Plus, it is super fast!
